Of mice and men
John Steinbeck. Pretty cool book, decent read. Well, thats my latest read... John Steinbeck's "Of Mice And Men".
Of men want to belong and find their roots, of love that men feel for one another-one inarticulate, dumb(big time!) and sometimes violent in his need, the other clever, hopeful and tied to responsibility he does not want. Very readable 118 pages. Flat in 2 hours. This books got pretty poignant moments as well as I quote:
"As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. And sound stopped and movement stopped for much more than a moment.
Then gradually time awakened again and moved sluggishly on. "
Very powerful description of the strength of weakness and the weakness of strength. This guy's actually a Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner....Completely makes sense....
Its got to do more with the after-effect of reading the book. Its makes one wonder whether one's identity in life or the sense of belonging is very important after all. I would never know. I think its tough to put oneself in others shoes and think especially if things happen that are too tough to imagine. Take for instance a description in the book where Steinbeck talks of the big weak guy Lennie. Loves petting soft furry things ( mice, pups) but loves petting them so much that he gets violent with them and kills them. Can never imagine doing that. So there are moments which are tough to imagine, but the general feel of the book is great. More importantly makes one think of the banal things in life. So people, read the book and think away :)
