The Azzurri's won!
He he..A tad late but the Azzurri's won!! An awesome match it was! Worth every moment's watch and wait. I could feel my heart racing every moment after the seventh minute when dear old Zizou penalt-ied for France and after the 19th when the man in question Materazzi headed for Italy. Italy was always ahead of France coming into the game. France's defnse seemed shaky and with Zizou being sent away during extra time, its only seemed certain that Italy was destined to win (I have no clue about football and about what im saying but every newspaper and blog seems to think so :D)
But yes, the Wimbledon final was worth a watch! The God almost breezed through the match without too much worry (i don't know why everybody kept questioning his nerves when he played against Nadal. The clay court matches are so different from the grass court ones and Federer just rules the grass courts!) except for the third set which again, he didnt let go easily. The odds were always in favour of Federer though it wa a pleasant surprise that Nadal did reach the final. Nadal has an energy that seems to evoke a little bit of it in me. His ground strokes and his ability to scramble across the court like a puppy is definitely encouraging. Tennis is a sport that does evoke a sense of determination and grit and the drive to keep going. Two sets into the match , Federer had taken both 6-0, 7-6 and Nadal came back in the third 7-6. Awesome match. But nothing can compare with the 2001 Wimbledon final, Ivanisevic Vs Rafter. Methinks that was the match of the millenium. I remember biting my nails as i was watching that match. I wanted Rafter to win so badly and Ivanisevic too, knowing it was probably the last match he would ever play. Emotions running high, nerves everywhere, the match did top my all time favourites games ever! I just got off watching the match again. Ivanisevic sobbing like alil baby, one can't help feeling sorry for Rafter. He hasn't returned to win another Grand Slam but he was my all time favourite serve and volley players of current times. Edberg was another.
Wimbledon is currently making the balls heavier so players can refrain from playing the serve and volley games. The ATP (which btw, does NOT stand for Association of Tennis Professionals anymore) believe they want to have matches where they are longer points and better rallies. Sigh ! miss those old times.
I remember another one of those matches. It was Becker this time in hi last Wimbledon against the local Miles Mclagan. I don't even know if people have heard of him but he almost came close to beating Becker straight sets. Becker held 4 ( i think) matchpoints to come back and win the match! I truly felt sorry for the guy.
Anyways, two more days for my project to oficially get over. Unofficially it barely took off. I will not harp on that anymore.
It rained the whole day in Delhi. A welcome break indeed
7 bomb blasts rocked Mumbai. It rocked the whole country in fact. A series of 5 blasts rocked Srinagar earlier in the day. It is at times like these that i'm grateful for the gift of life. A feeling of helplessness has enveloped the country. No one knows who has done this and no one has claimed responsibility yet. Delhi is on red alert. I have been warned not to loaf around in the city. Few moments silence as a mark of solidarity for those who lost their lives for no fault of their own
A Feeling of rage and frustration overwhelms a lot of people and Mumbai did very well to come out and help the helpless immediately. It's at times like these that faith in the Human spirit is reaffirmed and I realise that life is truly a gift and one must learn to cherish it for who knows Kal ho na ho! (Can't believe i said it...seemed most appropriate )
